Maisky is a cellist who divides opinion, but theres no doubting the remarkable and highly individual artistry on offer here. His playing as an almost vocal quality that is particularly effective in these works. Moreover, the sound is superb with a lovely halo about Maiskys beautiful cello. This remains a landmark set in these works discographies. The exact contents are as follows.1 in G Major BWV 1007 (19:43). 4 in E-flat Major BWV 1010 (29:01). 5 in C minor BWV 1011 (30:04). 3 in C Major BWV 1009 (24:40). 2 in D minor BWV 1008 (23:22). 6 in D Major BWV 1012 (30:42). Of the CD release, the authoritative critic Zane Turner wrote for MusicWeb-International. As is the general case, for most who have fallen in love with this specific music, a favourite version will invariably exist. Of the dozen or so versions in this writers collection that of Mischa Maisky, conveying a strength, majesty and grandeur which reflect the intrinsic nature of the original compositions, holds special favour. Maisky has recorded the cycle three times and it is the second, DG 445 373-2, which holds special appeal.
Included is the full-size, 10-page booklet with insightful liner notes in English and French (by Malcolm Boyd), as well as in German (by Rita Fischer). The memorable cover photo of Maisky was taken by Reinhart Wolf, while the cover design was executed by Werner Koberstein. This album was produced by Hanno Rinke and Mischa Maisky, and was engineered by Heinz Wildhagen. The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is NM. There is some small scuffing to the upper-right corner, and a small crease to the right side, but that is all.
There no seam splits, corner breaks, owners' markings, or other defects, and the box remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive. Overall, this is a very fine collector's copy.
The condition of the original 10-page booklet is NM really, there are no flaws to speak of. The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback is superb in all 3 they are completely free of any marks or scratches. Overall, these rate as lovely collector's copies. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve. FEEDBACK: I will promptly leave feedback for all buyers. Please let me know before making a return.
