Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851.It is considered by many to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto and Rigoletto's beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to the curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda likewise falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father. ----------------------- Thank you very much for your interest. We rate both the disc and the jacket/ box/ artwork. General Standards For Grading (M) Mint - Perfect. No scuffs/scratches, not played, possibly still sealed.
No wear, marks, or any other imperfections. (NM) Near Mint - Almost perfect, that has usually only been played 1-3 times, in "like new" condition, no visual defects. (VG+/ EX) Very Good Plus/ Excellent - A few minor scuffs/scratches. This has been played, but handled with good care - certainly not abused. Insert/Inlay/Booklet/Sleeve/Digipak: Slight wear, marks, indentations, it may possibly have promo hole (or similar).(VG) Very Good - More light scuffs/scratches, or more-pronounced scratches. Obviously been played/ not handled as carefully as a VG+. Insert/Inlay/Booklet/ Sleeve/Digipak: More wear, marks, indentations than a VG+. May have slight fading, a small tear/rip, or some writing. (G/ G+) Good/ Good Plus - There are a lot of scuffs/scratches. However it will still play through without problems. This has not been handled with much care at all.
Insert/Inlay/Booklet/ Sleeve/Digipak: Well worn, marked, more obvious indentations, fading, writing, than a VG - possibly a more significant tear/rip. Thank you for shopping with Java House.
